12 Days and Counting....

Tate's two week check up was today. His stats are as follows:

Weight: 7 pounds 10 ounces (25th percentile -- there must be some really fat babies out there!)
Height: 21 inches (75th percentile)
His head is in the 75th percentile (I don't remember the dimensions)

Since his last appointment, which was last week, he has gained almost an entire pound (last week, he lost 6% of his birth weight and he weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces). I guess that breast milk is really fatty. Also, the cluster feedings that he had earlier this week really paid off. Good thing because if he lost anymore weight, it would have been really discouraging to continue breast feeding.

Tate has been really busy these past two weeks. He has had tons of company. Ed's Mom visited for almost a week. This past Friday, my entire family of 16 people visited for the afternoon. Fortunately, Tate was able to sleep through most of the chaos. He has also been to quite a few restaurants, the airport, the grocery store, and more... Most people are surprised to see such a little baby behave so well -- so are we!

For the most part Tate has been an excellent baby. He only cries when he's hungry, has a dirty diaper, or is naked (how modest!). For some reason, he desires to be clothed at all times -- I don't think that he understands the concept of being naked during a diaper change or a bath. He has also started to focus on Mom and Dad more and is able to give us a little smirk at times.

He's adorable and you look fabulous!

Breastfed babies and weight. Let's just say: "URGH." Pediatric nurses and docs get parents all spun up about it when rarely it's a serious problem that needs intervention.

What growth chart is your doctor using? There are three he/she could be using. An outdated one from 1977 - based on formula fed babies, a more current one from 2000 or the WHO growth chart, released in 2006, which I believe, most accurately reflects the growth of breastfed babies.

Bottom line: most breastfed babies lose weight after birth, gain a ton and then drop off again before finding the curve they'll stay on. Eventually, they tend to be thinner than formula babies.

My girls have been as high as the 75% and then, around three months of age, dropped to 3% - where they have each stayed. A sudden drop caused great alarm with Olivia in AK. I stood my ground, did not go back for weight checks as demanded - assuming she was finding her curve (which she, indeed, was). When this happened to Lila the doc's remark: "She's dropping like Olivia did. So, we'll assume this is your children's pattern and we won't worry this time." Great, thanks!

Ok, I missed in the last post that you were calling him Tate and not David. So glad that I'm paying attention!

He looks adorable. I can't wait to see more pictures!

Natalie -- I'm not sure what growth chart they are using. If it's anything like their videos that we had to watch, it's probably something from the 70's. Thanks for the info on the weight issues -- I'm not too worried about his weight now. Hopefully, they won't bother me about his weight.
