Bermuda

Ed came home on leave in the middle of April. We spent two wonderful weeks together as a family. During his leave, we decided to take a short trip to Bermuda. Bermuda is a two hour direct flight from BWI. We thought a short, direct flight would be best with the two little ones. I must say that having Ed with me during a flight with the boys was awesome! He took one and I took the other. So nice!

Of course, Bermuda was also chosen because of all of the forts and cannons. Tate loved running around the forts and searching for cannons (as you can imagine, cannons are hard to find in a fort -- haha!). Colt even seem to be somewhat interested in cannons. I don't think that I will ever be able to take a family vacation without some sort of fort or cannon or military item.

Our first stop was Fort St. Catherine outside the town of St. George, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We decided to make all of our early morning stops at forts so that Tate would be tired and more willing to get into the Deuter backpack. Our plan worked and we never had a problem with Tate.

Colt thinks the cannon is interesting.

Here's Tate exploring the fort and searching for cannons.

Here I am lifting a small cannon. We tried to get Tate to do this, but he refused. Maybe it just wasn't big enough???

More interesting cannons.

Tate loved trying to push the cannons. While grunting, he would attempt to push the cannon. Then he would say "heavy" while still trying to push the cannon.

Views from the fort.

Taking a look at the ocean.

Pic of Ed and Colt

Our obligatory family-cannon picture. Haha!

After we toured the fort, we walked into the town of St. George. Here are views from the top of one of the hills heading into to town.

On the outskirts of town, there's an old unfinished church. It was pretty cool.

Here's Colt and I.

St. George.

St. Peter's Church, which is the oldest Anglican church in continuous use in the western hemisphere.

I am not a perfume kind of girl, but we decided to take a look at the Bermuda Perfumery. If I remember correctly, all perfumes are produced in Bermuda.

While we were walking around St. George, we saw a reenactment. The woman in the picture had to repent (I'm not sure for what -- we probably should've gotten there earlier so that we would know what was going on). In order for her to repent, they dunked her into the water. It was quite amusing, but I'm not sure if Tate really understood what was going on.

On a side note, more than this woman ended up in the ocean. While we were waiting on our food at a restaurant in St. George (we decided to eat outside -- what a mistake!), Tate thought that it would be amusing to throw not only Colt's sippy cup into the water, but also the mayo packets that were on the table. I'm suprised that they didn't kick us out of the resturant or arrest us for littering.

This boat is a replica of the Deliverance, which the colonists used to complete their trip to Jamestown, Virginia. Bermuda was founded by colonists heading to Virginia who were shipwrecked on the island.

While we were in St. George, I had to purchase stain remover (Imagine that....with Ed and two little ones, I failed to pack stain remover) and Ed and Tate purchased a kite to fly on Good Friday. Tate loved the kite so much that he wanted to carry it. It was so cute watching him walk through the town with his kite!

The next day we went to the Royal Naval Dockyard.

While we walked around the Dockyards, we noticed men trying to move this boat. Tate decided that he wanted to take some time and watch.

At the Dockyard, they had a ton of artist studios. One for clay, one for glasswork, and another devoted to local artists. Whenever Ed and I visit a place, we like to pick up local artwork, if possible. We were fortunate enough to find some nice pottery, necklaces (from the glasswork factory), and a picture drawn on banana leaf.

Both, Colt and I found this mug interesting. I picked up a mug made by Jon Faulkner that was salt glazed, which created a cool texture on it.

And yes, we took both Tate and Colt to the Glassworks Factory AND Tate wasn't in the Deuter. I know, it was a risk. Fortunately, he wasn't too interested in the glass once he saw a ramp that he could run up and down.

As you can see, Colt is exhausted. I think that he ran out of steam after the first full day of activities.

At the Dockyard, we went to the Bermuda Maritime Museum where Tate could really run loose!

Of course the museum is a fort! We can't go a day without a fort/cannon sighting!

While we were in Bermuda, Ed decided to show Tate how to operate a cannon. Of course, when we have our final house, Ed wants to get a cannon. According to Ed, the boys can polish the cannon and the ammunition for it. "It'll be part of their job".

The boys are having a great time!

I must say the the views from the various forts we visited were spectacular!

Tate ran all over the fort. Unfortunately, they must've just had goats on the propery to eat the grass because there were a ton of little poop pellets on the ground. And yes, because Tate was running around, he also fell a lot into the poop! Don't worry, it was hard and didn't stick/smear -- haha!

After our tour of the fort, we put Tate into the Deuter and let him have a drink and a snack (I made sure we brought snacks and drinks for the boys because the weather was warm and I knew they would be thirsty and hungry sooner than later). And yes, we washed Tate's hands before he was able to eat his snack.

Our boat trip from the Dockyard to Hamilton so that we could catch the ferry back to our hotel. Just as an FYI -- When you visit Bermuda, you're not allowed to rent a car. You may rent a moped or something similar, but only people who live on the island are allowed one car per family. Fortunately, there's plenty of transporation between the taxis and boats that are around the island.

Views during our boat ride.

During our final full day, we went to the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ). We did bring the Belle carrier for Colt, but Ed offered to carry Colt in the Deuter. Little did I know, Colt would throw a fit and not allow Ed to carry him. So...I had to carry him on my back. Until I ultimately decided to put him in the Belle. For me, the Deuter didn't sit properly on my back. I think that once Colt outgrows the Belle, I'll have to get a smaller Deuter to carry Colt on my back.

Tate likes to be the leader.

At BAMZ, Tate enjoyed the children's park.

This is a pretty lagoon outside of BAMZ.

The city of Hamilton.

Kite flying in Horseshoe Bay Beach on Good Friday, which is a Bermuda tradition. We were also supposed to eat fish cakes, but we had to leave early to catch our flight home.

Tate flying the kite by himself!

Colt playing in the sand.

Tate exploring Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Tate waving to strangers.

I also brought a couple of toys for the boys to play with.

All of the boys playing together. As you can see, Tate likes to dig with his digger.

Here I'm making a fort out of sand and Tate is consistently destroying it before I can finish it. Colt, of course, is taking notes.

Colt playing in the sand.

Our family photo.

I love this picture of our feet!

Here's a quick video of Tate trying to push the cannon.

My dad spent two years during Vietnam in Bermuda with the Navy. He loved it. My parents took a second honeymoon there when I was eight. I'd love to go and don't know why Matt and I have skipped it!

Great pictures. It looks lovely there!

We have two Deuters. Neither of them fit my back well. I say go with an Ergo. It's a soft carrier - so travels really well and Liv, who is six, still fits in it. Though, I think the average kid kind of outgrows it by three. Smaller kids, four. Lila still fits perfectly in it and she's 4.5. I love the back-carry with it - does not hurt my back or shoulders at all.

Nice photos, but I do have to laugh at all your fort and cannon visits! Love it!
