Last Sunday, I woke up in the middle of night with an infection in my breast. Now, I know that some women can deal with the pain, but I definitely could not (even though I tried for a couple of hours). Finally after about 7.5 hours, I decided that it was time to go to the emergency room to get some emergency relief! Ed and I packed up the car and Tate (of course) and headed for Fort Belvoir, which is about 45 minutes away (a very long 45 minutes for me). I met with the doctor and he prescribed some antibiotics and pain medication. Hooray for pain medication! Even though I went into the hospital for myself, some of the nurses paid Tate a visit. One of the nurses wondered how much he weighed and she suggested that we weigh him. We found out that Tate currently weighs almost 12 pounds! I couldn't believe that! He's only 7 weeks old. Now, I wonder what percentile Tate is in....
Okay -- now to the good stuff....
Two weekends ago, Tate’s aunt, Cherie, paid us a visit. Tate was very excited t
o see someone new. He was on his best behavior most of the weekend. Not only was he able to spend time with his Mutti (aka Ed’s mom), but he was also able to entertain his aunt. During the first night of Cherie’s arrival, we decided to take her to a Vietnamese restaurant near the airport. Unfortunately, Cherie isn’t too keen on ethnic food, but she braved our decision to go to the restaurant. Oh, and I must say that it was delicious! I still love Asian food and I miss all of the good Thai and Korean restaurants in Alaska (And yes, I do miss something about Alaska, but not the long, cold, and dark winter months).
Two Fridays ago, I had to go to my postpartum appointment on Fort Belvoir. Fortunately, Ed’s mom and sister were there to take and entertain Tate during my appointment. At the beginning of my appointment they took my weight – I am currently at my pre-pregnancy weight – hooray! At first I was dreading the weight scale, but when the numbers popped up, I did an internal dance for joy. Also, during my appointment, they asked about domestic violence, which I don’t get. It’s interesting because when I went to my appointments at Fort Wainwright, they constantly ask about depression and at Fort Belvoir they are fixated on domestic violence.
We spent most of the mornings at home, but were able to get out of the house during the afternoon (actually, everyone was waiting on me because I try to sleep most weekend mornings as Ed is able to take care of Tate during these mornings). Last Saturday, we tried to go to Charlottesville to see Thomas Jefferson’s house, Monticello, but they were working on the road that goes between Charlottesville and Northern Virginia. Needless to say, traffic was horrible! So, we had to change our plans. Instead, we decided to go to horse country, which is in Middleburg, VA. On our way to Middleburg, we stumbled upon a horse competition. It was fun watching the horses jump the various obstacles. Ed’s sister used to ride horses when she was young. So, I think that everyone enjoyed watching the horses.

While Ed's sister and mother were here, they had the privilege of bathing Tate. He even performed a urine ambush on them while they were bathing him. It was hilarious! He had a good time and, for once, didn’t cry while he
was getting a bath. Maybe we should have Ed’s sister and mother bathe Tate more often.
These past few weeks, Tate has been pretty good (except for yesterday evening -- Sorry Mom! Yes, my mother had to witness one of Tate's fits.). I have finally figured out that if he doesn’t have a good 2-3 hour nap during the afternoon, he will have a bad evening. So, I do everything in my power to ensure that he takes a nice long nap. For instance, I drove him around in a car one day and on another day I rocked him for FOREVER to ensure that he would sleep.
New Tate-isms
· He’s grinning more often and has actually laughed for Ed
· He can hold himself up for a substantial amount of time
· He can roll onto his side
· He likes to wedge himself into the corner of his crib (that one kind of scares me, but I can’t stop him from doing it).
· He’s starting to imitate Ed and I in whatever we do
· He likes it when we read to him (I try to read at least two books to him a day – His favorite ones seem to be “Horns and Toes and In Between” and “Moo, Baa, Lalala” by Sandra Boynton – I think that he likes these books because he grins the most when I read them to him).
Now, more pictures of Tate with family...

Sounds like you had mastitis!?Ouch! I've only ever had the very very early signs of it (very slight pain, low grade fever, tenderness and redness). I was able to ward it off by Motrin, warm compresses, lots of nursing, massage and LOTS of rest. But, had it gotten worse, I too would have ran to the nearest doctor for drugs! I have so much sympathy for mothers with this! What a bummer. Glad you got the right stuff, fast!
He's just adorable. I love it when family is around! He's getting so big!
Isn't it interesting when they start to get into their own routine! I find it one of the most amazing things, in infancy, when a pattern starts to develop and you learn the ques quickly and get them into a good sleep/awake routine. Not all mom's notice it or are too busy w/other kids schedules to keep up with it - then sleep issues become more than the usual sleep-nemisis most mother's have!
Wait until you have your 2nd child. I'm not sure the pounds will come off so quickly. But maybe it's only me. I'm going to blog about it soon. With Wesley, no problem. With Nathan, I still look pregnant and I'm at 4 weeks!Aagh! Glad to see you guys are doing well, except for the mastitis. That doesn't sound like fun at all!
