Christmas Preparation

Last weekend, we picked out our tree. It isn't too impressive because we had to get one that would fit on top of our fireplace. Ed and I decided to put the tree on the fireplace so that we wouldn't be fighting with Tate over him taking the ornaments off of the tree.

Tate didn't enjoy picking it out because the wind made it difficult for him to breathe (for some reason, he still doesn't understand how to breathe when the weather is cold and windy). Because Tate didn't like being outside, we picked the tree out as a family and Ed took over the cutting and preparation with the customer service guy. Oh, we even put the tree in our car instead of on top -- there's nothing like the old Alaska tradition of putting a tree in the car for Christmas to bring back memories.

Tate only helped us put the lights on the tree.

Tate also wanted to smell the tree while we decorated it.

Ed and I put the ornaments on the tree. Unfortunately, we were only able to use a small percentage of our ornaments because of the size of the tree. Maybe in a few years, we'll actually be able to have a tree on the floor again. Even though we have a small tree, we're pretty happy with it.

This past Saturday, we went to Middleburg, VA for the parade with the Middleburg Hunt Club. For some reason, it actually decided to snow in December this year. Maybe I'm just used to the mild winters that we've been having lately. Even though the snow was pouring down on us, we had a great time watching the people in their hunting garb seated on their horses with their dogs following.

At first, we had Tate wait in the stroller so that he wouldn't get too wet.

Then the horses started to come and we took him out to watch.

Tate even liked catching the snow on his tongue.

Sunday morning, we celebrated St. Nicholas Day. It's a European holiday that Ed's family used to celebrate and we thought that it would be fun to celebrate it with our family. Because Tate is so young and our cats occupy the entrance of our house, we decided to put our shoes out on the second floor in front of the baby gate that leads to the first floor stairs. When Tate woke up, he discovered his shoes filled with animal toys (a donkey and a gorilla) and a few lottery tickets (something Ed's parents used to do for fun). Tate enjoyed the paper, but he'll get more playtime out of the animal toys.

I love St. Nicholas day! It looks like a pretty big tree to go on a mantle, too. I'm impressed. We've just always made sure that we put our most fragile ornaments around the top. The worst breaks we had on our tree was when I decided that the tree was a bit crooked and tried to fix it by myself. The tree fell all of the way down. So, not the kids so much.
